One question comes up in almost every first meeting with a small business owner: “Should I make a website first, or set up my Google Business Profile?” Both cost time and money, and most owners want to start with whichever brings customers sooner.
The short answer: if you serve a local area, start with your Google Business Profile, then build a website within a few weeks. You need both, because they do different jobs. Here is what each one does, which to set up first, and a simple 30-day plan.
What a Google Business Profile does
A Google Business Profile is your free listing on Google Search and Google Maps. When someone nearby searches for “dentist near me” or “boutique in Byculla”, the businesses shown on the map come from these profiles.
Your profile shows the details customers need to decide quickly:
- Your business name, category and service area
- Phone number, opening hours and directions
- Photos of your shop, clinic, team or work
- Reviews and star rating from real customers
- Posts about offers, updates and new services
For many local customers, the profile is the first thing they see before they call, and it can start appearing in local results soon after verification.
What a website does
A profile gets attention. A website earns trust and turns that attention into enquiries, and it is the one place online you fully control.
A good business website lets you:
- Explain each service on its own page, with prices, process and FAQs
- Show proof: client work, case studies, testimonials and qualifications
- Take enquiries and bookings through forms or WhatsApp
- Rank on Google for searches beyond your area, such as “how much does a website cost”
- Look established to customers who check you out before calling
A website also supports your profile. Google says prominence includes how many sites link to your business, and a website gives them something to link to. Every website we develop is built to work with the client’s profile.
Website vs Google Business Profile at a glance
| Google Business Profile | Website | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Get found on Google Maps and local search | Build trust and convert visitors into enquiries |
| Cost | Free to create | Domain, hosting and design or maintenance |
| Time to set up | A few days, including verification | A few weeks for a proper site |
| Who controls it | Google sets the layout and rules | You control content and design |
| Best for | “Near me” and area searches | Detailed services, pricing, proof and bookings |
| Ownership | Listing on Google’s platform | Your own domain and content |
Which should you set up first?
It depends on how customers find and buy from you.
Start with your Google Business Profile if you are a clinic, salon, shop, restaurant, gym or any business serving a local area. Customers search with a place in mind, and the profile puts you on the map within days, for free.
Start with a website if you sell online, serve customers across India, or sell something people research for weeks, such as software or interior design. A profile alone cannot explain enough to win them.
Do both together if you can. For most small businesses in Mumbai, verify the profile in week one, then launch a simple website and link it from the profile. Our Google Business Profile management and website work often run side by side.
Why your business needs both
Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the person searching. Prominence is how well known your business is, including reviews and links from other sites.
A profile and a website cover different parts of that picture:
- Relevance: your profile’s categories and services tell Google what you do, while detailed website pages back that up with real content.
- Prominence: reviews build it on the profile, and links to your website build it across the web.
- Conversion: the profile gets the click, and the website closes the enquiry.
Google also says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results, so keep your name, phone number, hours and area the same on both.
A simple 30-day plan to set up both

- Week 1: Create and verify your Google Business Profile. Choose the right main category, add your phone number, hours, service area and a clear description.
- Week 1–2: Add photos and ask for your first reviews. Upload real photos of your work and space, and send your review link to five to ten happy customers.
- Week 2–3: Launch a simple website. Start with a home page, one page per main service, an about page and a contact page with your phone, WhatsApp and map.
- Week 3: Link them together. Add the website to your profile, and add your profile link and the same contact details to your website.
- Week 4: Start posting and measuring. Publish one profile post a week, add a blog post every month, and check your profile’s Performance tab and Google Search Console to see which searches bring customers.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?
You can get calls with only a profile, but customers who want more detail will go elsewhere. A website answers their questions, shows proof of your work and ranks for searches the profile cannot reach.
Is a Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile is free. Google also says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking, so results come from complete information, reviews and activity.
Can I add my website link to my Google Business Profile?
Yes, and you should. Add your website in the profile’s contact details, and make sure the name, phone number and area on your website match the profile exactly.
Get both working for your business
A Google Business Profile helps customers find you. A website helps them choose you. Start with the profile if you serve a local area, add the website soon after, and keep the details on both the same.
